Catastrophic flooding forces mass evacuations in Washington state

Washington state is facing one of its most severe flooding events in recent years, with authorities ordering roughly 100,000 residents to evacuate low-lying areas after days of relentless rainfall. The situation escalated mid-week when widespread river overflow prompted Governor Bob Ferguson to declare a statewide emergency, warning that “the coming days will be critical for public safety.”

Meteorologists report that parts of western Washington and neighboring northwest Oregon have received more than 10 inches of rain since the beginning of the week. Seattle experienced some of the heaviest rainfall, with estimates ranging from 12 to 16 inches over a 72-hour period, overwhelming drainage systems and raising river levels at record speed.

Communities along the Skagit River, northeast of Seattle, are among the most affected. Local officials issued urgent evacuation instructions for anyone living within the 100-year floodplain, urging residents not to delay in seeking higher ground as water levels continued to rise overnight.

Emergency crews have been deployed across the region to support evacuations, monitor riverbanks, and assist residents caught off-guard by the rapid flooding. Authorities have warned that additional rainfall could worsen conditions, and disruptions to infrastructure — including power outages and road closures — remain likely.

With flood risks still growing, officials stress that compliance with evacuation orders is essential to avoid life-threatening situations.
