Syrian-US military delegation targeted by gunfire in Palmyra

Several American soldiers were injured on Saturday after a joint Syrian-US military delegation came under gunfire in the desert area of Palmyra, according to Syrian state media.

The incident occurred while members of the U.S. forces and Syrian security services were conducting a joint tour in the region, which had previously been under the control of the Islamic State group. Syrian authorities reported that multiple U.S. personnel were wounded, along with two members of the Syrian security forces.

According to the same source, the origin of the gunfire remains unclear. However, officials stated that the individual responsible for the attack was killed shortly after the incident. No group has so far claimed responsibility.

The area around Palmyra remains sensitive despite the territorial defeat of extremist groups in recent years. Security operations and joint patrols continue to be carried out in order to prevent the resurgence of armed cells and to stabilize the region.

U.S. and Syrian officials have not yet provided further details on the condition of the injured soldiers or the broader implications of the attack. Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
