Washington vows response to Rwanda’s alleged breach of DRC peace deal
The United States has warned that it will respond to what it describes as a clear violation by Rwanda of the peace agreement signed with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in Washington, raising concerns over renewed instability in central Africa.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Rwanda’s actions in eastern DRC contradict the commitments made under the Washington agreement, which was aimed at reducing tensions and restoring stability along the shared border. He stressed that the United States expects all parties to fully respect the terms of the deal.
According to U.S. officials, the agreement was intended to prevent cross-border interference and support diplomatic efforts to end recurring violence in the region. Any breach, they argue, undermines not only bilateral relations but also broader regional security.
While Washington has not yet specified the measures it may take, the statement signals a firmer stance toward Kigali and renewed diplomatic pressure to ensure compliance with the accord. The situation in eastern DRC remains volatile, with ongoing security challenges and humanitarian concerns.
