Apple strengthens government affairs team amid Trump trade challenges

Apple is reshaping its government affairs leadership by appointing Nate Gatten as vice president of global government affairs, a move aimed at strengthening the technology giant’s engagement with policymakers and regulators at a time of growing trade and political uncertainty.

Gatten is expected to begin his new role on August 31, overseeing Apple’s global government affairs operations. His appointment was announced through an internal memo issued by Apple General Counsel Jennifer Newstead and reviewed by Bloomberg.

The new executive brings extensive experience in government relations and political affairs. He previously worked at American Airlines, where he developed a broad network of contacts within U.S. political circles, including relationships with figures and groups associated with the Republican Party.

Gatten will replace Kate Adams, who is stepping down from her leadership position after years of overseeing Apple’s government affairs activities. Adams is expected to remain available as an adviser during the transition before formally retiring on October 1.

The leadership change comes as Apple faces a complex political and commercial environment. The company relies heavily on international manufacturing and supply chains, leaving it particularly exposed to changes in U.S. trade policy and tariffs on goods and components produced outside the country.

Trade policy has become increasingly important for major technology companies during Donald Trump’s presidency, as his administration has pursued tariffs and other measures aimed at reshaping international trade and encouraging greater domestic production.

For Apple, higher tariffs on imported components or finished products could affect manufacturing costs, pricing strategies and supply-chain decisions. The company has therefore placed greater importance on maintaining dialogue with policymakers as it navigates the evolving trade landscape.

Gatten’s government experience and political connections could strengthen Apple’s ability to engage with U.S. officials on issues including tariffs, international trade, technology regulation and broader economic policy.

The appointment highlights the growing importance of government affairs for multinational technology companies, as regulatory decisions and geopolitical tensions increasingly influence their business strategies and global operations.
