Strengthening Water Management Cooperation between Morocco and Hungary

Morocco and Hungary have expressed a strong commitment to enhancing their cooperation in the field of water management to address the growing challenges both countries face. During a recent visit to Morocco, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó emphasized the importance of leveraging both nations' expertise to tackle water-related issues.

This collaboration aligns with a shared vision to respond to the increasingly severe impacts of climate change, a concern that has intensified water management difficulties worldwide. Minister Szijjártó highlighted that both Morocco and Hungary often find themselves facing extreme situations, swinging between excess water that is difficult to manage and a severe shortage relative to demand. However, he noted that these challenges could be addressed through the implementation of innovative technologies.

A key area of focus in this cooperation is Morocco’s water management strategy for 2030. The strategy prioritizes solutions such as wastewater treatment and recycling, flood protection, and river pollution control. Minister Szijjártó praised Morocco’s approach, emphasizing that Hungary possesses world-leading technologies in water management, developed in response to its own geographical challenges, including the numerous rivers that run through the country. These advanced technologies are now set to support Morocco in a mutually beneficial collaboration.

For his part, Moroccan Minister of Equipment and Water Nizar Baraka expressed interest in exploring further cooperation with Hungary. He pointed out that Hungary’s advanced technologies, especially in fields like desalination, wastewater treatment, and flood protection, could significantly benefit Morocco’s water management efforts.

As part of this cooperation, Morocco will be able to draw upon Hungary's expertise to address key priorities outlined in the national strategy, such as water desalination, the treatment of wastewater, flood prevention, and combating pollution. The partnership is expected to involve not only water management but also civil engineering, with the aim of strengthening Morocco's capacities in these crucial areas.

This partnership marks a significant step in building a sustainable and resilient approach to water management, reflecting both countries’ commitment to overcoming the challenges posed by climate change. The collaboration between Morocco and Hungary is expected to deepen, expanding into new sectors and creating lasting solutions to some of the most pressing environmental issues of our time.
