Ukrainian drone strike disrupts operations at Russian electronics plant

On June 9, a Ukrainian drone strike reached deep into Russian territory, temporarily halting production at an electronics facility in the Chuvashia region along the Volga River, according to the regional governor. The plant, located approximately 1,300 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, ceased operations to ensure employee safety, Governor Oleg Nikolayev announced via Telegram.

Though there were no reported injuries, the impact of the drones led to precautionary shutdowns at the VNIIR enterprise. A separate drone was reported to have landed in agricultural fields near Cheboksary, the regional capital.

Ukraine's military confirmed that at least two drones targeted the VNIIR facility, which produces navigation systems used in precision weapons and attack drones. They also claimed the strike resulted in a significant fire at the plant, though this information has not been independently verified by Reuters.

Russia's defense ministry stated that its air defenses intercepted 49 Ukrainian drones overnight, including two over Chuvashia. However, it did not disclose the total number launched by Ukraine.

Kyiv has consistently maintained that its operations within Russian borders aim to dismantle military infrastructure critical to Russia’s ongoing war campaign, often citing them as retaliatory actions for continued Russian attacks on Ukrainian territory.

The VNIIR institute, which specializes in relay engineering and experimental production, is currently listed under U.S. sanctions. Meanwhile, another Ukrainian drone strike in Russia's Voronezh region damaged a gas pipeline, affecting service to 22 clients, local authorities reported.
