Morocco’s inflation rate rises to 1.7% in April

Inflation in Morocco increased to 1.7% in April, up from 0.9% in the previous month, according to data released by the national statistics authority.

The rise in prices was mainly driven by higher food and transport costs, which continue to have a strong impact on household spending. Food prices, a key component of inflation in the country, increased slightly by 0.6% year-on-year, while non-food items rose by 2.5%.

Transport costs recorded a significant increase of 8.4%, largely due to higher fuel prices linked to global energy market fluctuations and geopolitical tensions. These external pressures have added strain to domestic price stability.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile products and government-regulated prices, showed mixed movement, declining slightly year-on-year while increasing modestly on a monthly basis. This indicates uneven price dynamics across different sectors of the economy.

To mitigate the impact of rising costs on citizens, the government is planning additional fiscal support measures, including increased subsidies aimed at stabilizing public transport fares, cooking gas, and electricity prices.

Economists note that Morocco continues to face inflationary pressures driven by global energy trends, but overall price growth remains relatively moderate compared to many other economies.
