UN Security Council holds emergency meeting following US-Iran tensions
The United Nations Security Council will convene an emergency meeting on Saturday at 21:00 GMT (16:00 local time in New York) to discuss the escalating situation in the Middle East following a U.S. military operation targeting Iran, the UN announced.
The session was requested by France and Bahrain, according to Israel’s UN mission. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the escalation and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities.
The emergency meeting comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with public demonstrations in Iran showing support for the government and opposition to U.S. and Israeli strikes. Diplomats stress the importance of dialogue to prevent further instability and to address security concerns across the Middle East.
