Pakistan and Afghan Taliban clash amid rising diplomatic efforts
Clashes between Pakistani forces and Afghanistan's Taliban military entered a third consecutive day on Saturday, following overnight confrontations that have heightened international concern and calls for urgent dialogue.
Pakistani strikes on Friday targeted Taliban military positions and installations, including locations in Kabul and Kandahar, marking one of the most significant cross-border operations in recent years. Islamabad has accused the Taliban of providing sanctuary to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants, who are allegedly carrying out attacks within Pakistan—a claim denied by the Taliban.
While Pakistan frames its actions as retaliation for cross-border assaults, Afghan authorities condemned the strikes as a violation of national sovereignty, emphasizing their willingness to pursue dialogue but warning of serious consequences if the conflict expands. Analysts note that the rugged 2,600-km (1,615-mile) border increases the risk of a prolonged confrontation.
Diplomatic efforts intensified on Friday, with Afghanistan’s foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, holding talks by phone with Saudi Arabia’s Prince Faisal bin Farhan to ease tensions and maintain open communication channels. International actors continue urging restraint to prevent escalation.
