Israeli-US strikes target Iran's Supreme Leader selection body
Israeli and U.S. forces carried out airstrikes on Tuesday in Iran targeting the building that houses the Assembly of Experts, the institution responsible for selecting a new Supreme Leader following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the onset of the ongoing conflict, local media reported.
According to the Tasnim news agency, the attack in Qom, south of Tehran, was described as a strike by “American-Zionist criminals” against the Assembly of Experts, which oversees the appointment, supervision, and potential dismissal of Iran’s Supreme Leader. Footage circulated by local outlets showed significant damage to the building.
The incident marks a major escalation in regional tensions, highlighting the strategic importance of Iran’s political and religious leadership structures. Analysts note that targeting such institutions could have long-term implications for the country’s governance and stability.
