Protests erupt across Middle East after US-Israel strikes on Iran
The violence in Karachi formed part of widespread demonstrations across Pakistan and the Middle East that followed a US-Israeli military operation against Iran. The Pentagon named the February 28 action Operation Epic Fury. It killed Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at his Tehran compound, along with senior officials, and struck military sites, nuclear facilities, and government infrastructure.
In Baghdad, hundreds of Iraqis tried to enter the Green Zone, home to the US Embassy. They threw stones at security forces, who used tear gas and stun grenades. Protests spread to southern Iraq as well. In Islamabad, police blocked access to the diplomatic Red Zone and deployed tear gas and rubber bullets against crowds attempting to break through barriers.
The clashes highlighted risks from the escalating US-Iran conflict. By Sunday, three US service members had died, and hundreds perished in Iran, including civilians. Iran fired missiles and drones at sites in Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia on March 1. Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari voiced regret over Khamenei's death and affirmed support for Iran.
