Ayatollah Alireza Arafi appointed as interim Supreme Leader following Khamenei’s death
Iran has appointed Alireza Arafi to serve on the interim leadership body responsible for carrying out the duties of Supreme Leader after the death of Ali Khamenei, according to official reports.
The announcement was made by the state news agency Islamic Students News Agency, which stated that Arafi will act as the jurist member of a provisional council tasked with ensuring institutional continuity.
Under Iran’s Constitution, the temporary leadership structure consists of the president of the republic, the head of the judiciary, and a senior Islamic jurist selected from the Guardian Council. This body assumes the responsibilities of the Supreme Leader until a permanent successor is chosen through the constitutional process.
The appointment comes at a time of heightened political tension following the killing of Khamenei during recent military strikes on Tehran. Authorities have emphasized the importance of maintaining stability and adherence to constitutional procedures during the transition period.
The Supreme Leader holds the highest authority within the Islamic Republic, overseeing key state institutions, the armed forces, and major strategic decisions. As a result, the interim arrangement is considered critical to preserving governance and preventing a power vacuum.
Political analysts suggest that the coming weeks will be decisive, as Iran’s Assembly of Experts is expected to initiate the process of selecting a new Supreme Leader in accordance with constitutional provisions.
