Somasteel expands steel production capacity in Nouaceur

Moroccan steel producer Somasteel has inaugurated the expansion of its production site in Nouaceur, marking a major milestone for the national steel industry. The ceremony was held under the chairmanship of the Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour.

The extension includes the installation of a modern electric steelmaking facility, supported by an investment of approximately 760 million dirhams. Once operational, the project is expected to reach an annual production capacity of around 400,000 tonnes of steel billets. It will also significantly boost employment, increasing direct jobs from 250 to 850 positions and creating nearly 1,800 indirect jobs, thereby strengthening the region’s socio-economic development.

By integrating the full industrial process—from scrap metal recycling to the production of reinforcing steel bars—the investment completes Somasteel’s production chain. The project aligns with national industrial strategies aimed at reinforcing industrial sovereignty and promoting locally manufactured products under the “Made in Morocco” label.

Speaking at the event, Minister Mezzour praised Somasteel’s efforts and highlighted the importance of strengthening the competitiveness of the steel sector. He emphasized the need to continuously improve quality and productivity, enhance local value chains and accelerate the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies.

Somasteel’s Chief Executive Officer, Khalid Machrah, stated that the new extension represents a key step in the company’s vertical integration strategy, enabling the local production of billets, a critical raw material for reinforcing steel. He also stressed that the facility was designed, installed and commissioned entirely by Moroccan expertise.

The project illustrates the strategic role of the Mechanical and Metallurgical Industries sector, which acts as a driving force behind Morocco’s economic transformation. This sector comprises nearly 2,000 companies, employs more than 75,000 people and generates annual revenues exceeding 84 billion dirhams, including significant export contributions.
