Trump receives inaugural FIFA peace award amid controversy
Former U.S. President Donald Trump was awarded the first-ever FIFA Peace Award during the draw ceremony for the 2026 World Cup in Washington, D.C., an honor established to recognize individuals who unite people and inspire future generations.
The ceremony marked the official draw for the tournament, which will take place next summer across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with 78 of the 104 matches scheduled in the U.S., culminating in the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino praised Trump for his efforts in international peace agreements, highlighting his role in several diplomatic negotiations. Trump celebrated the award on stage, claiming that his actions had "saved millions of lives," referencing peace deals involving countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, India, and Pakistan.
The decision has drawn criticism from Human Rights Watch, which denounced a lack of transparency regarding the selection process. The organization reported it had requested information on nominees, judges, and criteria for the award but had received no response from FIFA.
Trump also acknowledged the cooperation of Mexico and Canada in organizing the World Cup, praising what he described as "extraordinary" collaboration despite recent trade tensions.
