Ramadan 2025 in Australia begins on March 1
Australia has officially confirmed that the first day of Ramadan 2025 will be on March 1. The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) announced the date via a post on X, sharing their excitement for the holy month.
The council also extended well-wishes for a blessed and joyful Ramadan to Muslims in Australia and around the world. The date was verified by the Grand Mufti of Australia, Ibrahim Abu Mohamad, alongside other religious authorities in the country, including ANIC.
Ramadan, which spans 29-30 days, requires Muslims to fast from dawn until sunset. A key tradition after fasting is iftar, where dates and water or milk are consumed to rehydrate and nourish the body after a day without food or water.
Muslims gather after iftar for Taraweeh, special nightly prayers, often in mosques or community centers, where free evening meals are also shared. Fasting during this holy month is one of the five pillars of Islam, symbolizing a Muslim's devotion to their faith.
In Australia, despite the Muslim community being a minority, Ramadan brings an atmosphere of togetherness, with communal iftar events that unite families and friends for both spiritual reflection and celebration. Although Islam remains a minority religion in the country, it continues to grow, with a 2021 census showing approximately 813,392 Muslims in Australia, making up 3.2% of the national population.
