Over a Decade of Service to Casablanca's Mobility
For over a decade, Casablanca, Morocco's largest metropolis and true economic hub, has embarked on an ambitious transformation of its transportation network. This colossal project aims to address the challenges posed by the city's rapid urbanization, which has seen its population and economic activity grow at an impressive pace. Leading this monumental initiative is Casatransport SA, a local development company (LDC) created in 2009, which has played a crucial role in the development and modernization of urban transportation in Casablanca.
Casablanca, A City in Full Transformation
With its ever-growing skyscrapers, modernizing neighborhoods, and multiplying infrastructure projects, Casablanca represents a city reinventing itself. However, this accelerated development has brought major challenges, notably road congestion and accessibility issues. In response, urban mobility has become a strategic lever to improve the quality of life for residents. An efficient and integrated transport network is vital not only to ease traffic but also to promote social inclusion and enable the people of Casablanca to fully benefit from the economic opportunities of their city.
Casatransport SA: A Pillar of Urban Mobility
Founded more than 14 years ago, Casatransport SA has established itself as the project manager for the city's urban transportation projects, with a capital of 5.301 billion dirhams, 55.74% of which is owned by the Commune of Casablanca. As an LDC, the company is tasked with planning, developing, and managing innovative and sustainable urban mobility solutions. It has built strong partnerships with both local and international stakeholders to ensure the success of its projects. Among its most significant achievements are the development of tramway and busway lines, as well as important road infrastructure projects.
Strategic Infrastructure Projects
In addition to the tramway network, Casatransport SA is also involved in strategic road projects. The company has played a key role in the construction and development of bridges, underpasses, and traffic hubs. These infrastructures are essential for alleviating congestion and ensuring faster, safer journeys. Notable projects include the Sidi Abderrahman underpass, the Rabat Road, and more recently, the Ghandi underpass, inaugurated in 2020. These initiatives have helped streamline traffic in areas once notorious for their never-ending traffic jams.
Casatransport SA also manages Casablanca's Central Command Post, a critical infrastructure that coordinates and monitors all traffic flows in real-time. Thanks to this command center, authorities can quickly intervene to resolve incidents and regulate traffic, thereby enhancing the mobility experience for Casablanca's residents.
The Tramway Network: A Symbol of Modernity
One of Casatransport SA's most emblematic achievements is undoubtedly the tramway network, which has transformed urban mobility in Casablanca. Since the inauguration of the first T1 line on December 12, 2012, the tramway has become a reference mode of transport, combining efficiency, speed, and environmental respect.
With the launch of the T2 line in 2019, the network expanded, making travel easier across many neighborhoods. These modern lines, well integrated into the urban fabric, have helped relieve traffic congestion and make commuting more pleasant for thousands of citizens.
In 2024, two new tramway lines, T3 and T4, were added to the existing network, bringing the total length to 98 km. These new lines serve strategic neighborhoods and include 39 stations, providing optimal service and efficient connections to other modes of transport. The network is also enhanced by modern Alstom X05 trains, capable of carrying up to 600 passengers, ensuring a frequency of 5 to 10 minutes between trains.
The Busway Project: A Complementary Alternative
Alongside the tramway's development, Casatransport SA launched the Busway project, a dedicated public transportation system that complements the tramway network. The BW1 and BW2 busway lines, introduced in 2024, offer a fast and efficient alternative for areas not covered by the tramway. These busways have dedicated lanes, allowing them to travel without being affected by road traffic, thus reducing travel time for passengers.
A Remarkable Socio-Economic Impact
Beyond improving mobility, Casatransport SA's projects have had a significant socio-economic impact. They promote access to jobs, healthcare services, and educational institutions, thus enhancing social integration and the well-being of residents. Furthermore, the construction of these infrastructures has created numerous jobs, stimulating the local economy.
The public transport network also helps reduce the city's carbon footprint, a crucial goal in the fight against climate change. The tramways, powered by cleaner energy sources, and the busways, designed to be energy-efficient, are concrete examples of this shift towards a more sustainable mobility model.
Future Perspectives
Casablanca is not stopping here. Casatransport SA continues to work on projects aimed at densifying and modernizing the transport network. Studies are underway for new tramway lines and busway extensions, with the goal of making Casablanca a model city for sustainable urban mobility in Africa.
Casatransport SA's vision fits into a broader strategy that takes into account the future needs of the population. With urbanization showing no signs of slowing down, the focus is on innovation and sustainability. The company is exploring smart mobility solutions, such as integrating digital technologies to improve the user experience and optimize network management.
In just over ten years, Casatransport SA has made significant contributions to the transformation of urban mobility in Casablanca. Its ambitious and well-executed projects have not only improved the quality of life for residents but have also laid the foundation for a more sustainable and prosperous future for the city. As Casablanca continues to grow, Casatransport SA remains committed to tackling the challenges of mobility with innovative and environmentally-friendly solutions.
