Clarifications issued after woman gives birth on Rabat tramway

The Moroccan Ministry of Health and Social Protection has provided new details following an emergency birth that occurred inside a tramway in Rabat and tragically resulted in the death of the newborn.

In a public statement, the ministry emphasized that no record was found of the mother passing through the Moulay Abdallah Hospital in Salé, contrary to information circulating on social media. An internal review of hospital entry logs, security footage, and staff testimonies confirmed that the woman never arrived at the facility after the incident.

According to information gathered on site, the woman began experiencing active labor while traveling on the tramway. She reportedly suffered a severe hemorrhage, prompting immediate intervention from Civil Protection teams. Emergency responders transported her to the Souissi Maternity Hospital, where she was examined and placed under medical supervision. Doctors later confirmed that the baby was already in a state of fetal death upon her arrival.

Preliminary findings also indicate that the patient had been living with long-standing psychiatric disorders, the ministry noted. She has since been admitted to the Arrazi Hospital to receive specialized care.

The Ministry of Health expressed its deep regret over the incident and extended its condolences to the family, stating that it handles such cases with “seriousness and transparency” to ensure accurate information is shared with the public and to prevent the spread of misinformation.
