€30 million heist at German savings bank branch shocks authorities

A branch of Germany’s Savings Bank in the western city of Gelsenkirchen was targeted in a major burglary over the weekend, with losses estimated at nearly €30 million, according to police sources.

More than 3,000 safe-deposit boxes containing cash, jewelry and gold were broken into, prompting the bank to remain closed on Tuesday for security reasons. Authorities said large numbers of concerned customers gathered at the site seeking information after the incident became public.

German media described the robbery as highly sophisticated, noting that the perpetrators reportedly drilled through the vault wall using heavy industrial equipment. Investigators believe the suspects took advantage of the Christmas holiday period, when activity in the area was reduced.

Witnesses told police they saw several men carrying large bags in the stairwell of a nearby parking garage during the night between Saturday and Sunday. Surveillance footage later showed a black vehicle with stolen license plates, driven by masked individuals, leaving the same parking facility early Monday morning.

The investigation remains ongoing, with police still working to identify those responsible and determine the exact timing of the break-in.
