Volkswagen unveils China developed electric cars ahead of Beijing auto show
Volkswagen has introduced two new electric vehicles developed in China as global automakers prepare for Auto China 2026, where domestic brands are expected to intensify competition in the premium segment. The move reflects a broader shift in the world’s largest auto market, where Chinese manufacturers are rapidly gaining ground against established German rivals.
The Beijing auto show, running from April 24 to May 3, will feature 1,451 vehicles, including 181 global premieres, across a record exhibition area of 380,000 square meters. Chinese automakers such as Geely and Nio are set to present high end electric models equipped with advanced technology at prices significantly lower than comparable European offerings, signaling a direct challenge to brands like Porsche, Mercedes Benz, and BMW.
The competitive pressure has been building for years. Volkswagen, once dominant in China, lost its top position to BYD in 2024 and dropped to third place behind Geely in 2025. Sales by German manufacturers in China have declined by about 25 percent over five years, falling to 3.9 million vehicles in 2025. Industry executives acknowledge that younger buyers increasingly view traditional European brands as less relevant.
Chinese automakers are targeting the premium segment with feature rich vehicles. Nio has pre launched its ES9 electric SUV, offering dual motor all wheel drive with roughly 697 horsepower, a 102 kWh battery, and a 900 volt architecture designed for ultra fast charging. Pricing starts at 528,000 yuan with battery included, or lower under subscription models. Geely’s Lynk and Co brand plans to unveil a grand touring concept, while Smart, a joint venture between Mercedes Benz and Geely, will present new models ahead of the show.
Volkswagen’s response includes the ID. Aura T6 crossover and the ID. Unyx 09 sedan, both co developed with Chinese partners and built on locally designed electronic platforms. The vehicles incorporate lidar based driver assistance systems and AI powered cockpit technology, reflecting a strategy to align more closely with local innovation. The Unyx 09 follows the earlier Unyx 08 SUV, which uses an 800 volt architecture developed with Xpeng and targets the mid to high end market.
Analysts say the competition now extends beyond pricing. Chinese brands are delivering more advanced software, faster charging systems, and in vehicle digital experiences that are estimated to be two to three years ahead of Western competitors. This shift is forcing legacy automakers to accelerate adaptation as consumer expectations evolve rapidly in China’s electric vehicle market.
