Byd unveils electric hypercar and ultra fast charging at Beijing auto show

The 2026 Beijing international auto show opened with a strong display from BYD, which occupied an entire exhibition hall to present new electric vehicles and charging technologies. The Chinese automaker placed its new Denza Z hypercar at the center of its showcase while confirming a wider rollout of its Flash Charging 2.0 system across mainstream models. The event, which spans hundreds of thousands of square meters and features dozens of global premieres, runs until early May.

The Denza Z made its global production debut as a four seat electric convertible designed to compete with top tier performance cars. It uses a carbon fiber body and a tri motor setup delivering more than 1,000 horsepower. The car accelerates from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in under two seconds, placing it in the same performance class as leading electric hypercars. It integrates BYD’s second generation Blade battery and supports ultra fast charging, with the company stating that a full recharge can be achieved in about five minutes under optimal conditions.

Testing of the vehicle has already taken place on the Nürburgring circuit, and a public dynamic debut is scheduled for the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The model is expected to enter the European market after its showcase phase. Pricing remains undisclosed, though it is positioned above the recently introduced Z9 GT, which starts at around 115,000 euros in Europe. The strategy signals BYD’s intention to move further into the high performance segment while expanding its global presence.

BYD also used the event to broaden the scope of its Fang Cheng Bao sub brand, which had previously focused on rugged sport utility vehicles. The brand introduced several low profile sedans alongside the Formula X, an open top electric supercar with over 1,000 horsepower, butterfly style doors, and a full carbon fiber structure. Production for the Formula X is scheduled for 2027, while additional high performance electric models from the new Formula lineup are expected to reach Chinese dealerships by the end of 2026.

The most immediate impact for mass market consumers comes from the expansion of BYD’s flash charging technology. The company confirmed that Flash Charging 2.0 will be integrated into its best selling vehicles, including the latest generation Yuan Plus, marketed internationally as the Atto 3. The updated model can charge from 10 percent to 70 percent in five minutes and reach nearly full capacity in under ten minutes. To support this rollout, BYD plans to install 20,000 fast charging stations by the end of 2026. By late March, nearly 5,000 units were already operating across hundreds of cities in China, indicating a rapid buildout of charging infrastructure to match vehicle deployment.
