Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 164 after twin powerful quakes
At least 164 people have been killed and 971 others injured following two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela in quick succession on Wednesday evening, according to the country’s interim authorities.
Interim President Delcy Rodríguez confirmed the updated figures, noting that rescue operations are ongoing as emergency teams continue to search for survivors and assess the scale of the destruction across affected regions.
The twin earthquakes caused widespread damage to infrastructure, including residential buildings and public facilities, particularly in areas close to the capital Caracas. Authorities reported that several neighborhoods experienced power outages and communication disruptions in the aftermath of the tremors.
Seismological agencies had previously recorded two strong seismic events occurring within minutes of each other, significantly amplifying the impact on already vulnerable structures.
Emergency services have been deployed across multiple regions, with hospitals treating hundreds of injured people. Authorities have warned that the casualty figures may continue to rise as access to remote or heavily damaged areas improves.
The Venezuelan government has declared a state of emergency in the most affected zones and mobilized national resources to support rescue and relief operations, while international aid offers are being considered in response to the scale of the disaster.
