Uruguay's President apologizes over discounted purchase of luxury SUV

Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi has issued a public apology after controversy emerged over a substantial discount he received when purchasing a luxury sport utility vehicle shortly before taking office.

The issue came to light after local media reported discrepancies in the president’s asset declaration. According to the reports, the vehicle was purchased at a price significantly below its estimated market value, with the discount amounting to approximately $25,000, or more than €21,000.

In a statement released by the presidency, Orsi acknowledged that questions had arisen regarding the circumstances of the purchase. He explained that he considered the offered price reasonable at the time and expressed regret over the concerns generated by the transaction.

The president apologized to anyone who may have felt offended or believed that the situation affected public trust. He also pledged to cooperate fully with any official review of the matter.

Orsi stated that if oversight authorities determine that an error was made, he will accept responsibility. He further indicated that he would reimburse any difference between the amount paid and the vehicle’s market value should such a measure be required.

The controversy has prompted renewed debate in Uruguay regarding transparency standards and ethical conduct among public officials. Following requests from opposition lawmakers, the case has been referred to the country's Transparency and Public Ethics Commission for examination.

The commission's findings are expected to clarify whether the transaction complied with existing regulations and ethical guidelines. The case has attracted significant public attention in a country that traditionally places a strong emphasis on institutional accountability and governmental transparency.
