UK bond selloff triggers limited pension fund cash calls
A recent selloff in UK government bonds has led to a limited number of pension funds being asked to provide additional cash to support their hedging strategies, according to financial advisers. However, the impact appears far less severe than the market turmoil experienced in 2022.
The decline in bond prices has been driven in part by rising inflation concerns linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. As yields increase, certain pension schemes using liability-driven investment (LDI) strategies have faced pressure to meet additional cash requirements.
Despite these developments, advisers indicate that most funds remain stable, reflecting reforms introduced after the 2022 crisis. Those changes were designed to strengthen the resilience of pension funds and reduce systemic risks.
Regulators, including the Bank of England and the Pensions Regulator, are closely monitoring the situation to ensure financial stability. Market participants note that, unlike previous disruptions, current conditions remain under control, with only isolated cases of cash calls reported.
