Uber scales back European food delivery expansion amid Delivery Hero takeover pursuit
Uber has reportedly suspended most of its planned expansion of Uber Eats across Europe as the company focuses on its proposed acquisition of Delivery Hero, according to a report by the Financial Times.
The move marks a significant shift in Uber's European growth strategy just months after it unveiled plans to broaden its food delivery footprint across the continent.
Expansion plans scaled back
According to the report, Uber has abandoned plans to launch its food delivery service in five of the seven European countries originally targeted for expansion this year.
The countries identified include Austria, Norway and Greece, while the remaining two markets were not disclosed.
The decision suggests Uber is prioritising strategic consolidation over rapid geographic expansion.
Focus turns to Delivery Hero deal
The reported pause comes as Uber continues efforts to acquire Delivery Hero, one of Europe's largest food delivery companies.
If completed, the transaction could significantly strengthen Uber's position in the European food delivery market by expanding its customer base, restaurant network and operational footprint.
Neither Uber nor Delivery Hero immediately commented on the report.
Competitive European market
Europe remains one of the world's most competitive food delivery markets, with established regional and international operators competing for market share amid slowing post-pandemic growth.
Rather than investing in multiple new market launches, Uber appears to be concentrating resources on a deal that could accelerate its presence through acquisition instead of organic expansion.
The reported strategy reflects a broader trend in the technology sector, where companies are increasingly pursuing mergers and acquisitions to achieve scale while managing costs in a challenging economic and regulatory environment.
