Turkey arrests opposition officials in Istanbul amid corruption probe
Turkish authorities carried out a series of arrests on Friday targeting the opposition-led Istanbul municipality, including the mayor of the central Beyoglu district and several of his close advisors, according to Turkish media reports.
The 40 arrests, officially linked to allegations of corruption, continue a broader crackdown on the Republican People’s Party (CHP), Turkey’s main opposition party. The CHP has faced repeated arrests of its officials in recent months.
Ekrem Imamoglu, Istanbul’s mayor and considered the most prominent opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was previously detained in March, sparking nationwide protests not seen in the country for over a decade.
Since October, nine out of 26 CHP district mayors in Istanbul have been arrested, most on corruption charges which they deny. Analysts suggest the government is attempting to weaken the CHP, which achieved significant victories in local elections in spring 2024 at the expense of Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party (AKP).
