Türkiye closely monitors US operations in Syria and Iraq, ministry says
Türkiye’s National Defense Ministry announced on Thursday that it is closely monitoring US military activities in Syria and Iraq, alongside other regional developments, to ensure national security and maintain situational awareness.
According to ministry sources, Washington’s reassessment of its presence in Syria is influenced by the country’s accession as the 90th member of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS and the Syrian government’s gradually increasing authority across its territory.
The ministry also addressed recent speculation regarding the deployment of Türkiye’s S-400 air defense systems in Somalia, clarifying that there are no plans for such an operation. The systems were procured to meet the operational needs of the Turkish Armed Forces and remain ready for duty, the ministry emphasized.
Efforts to support the organization and counterterrorism operations of the Somali Armed Forces continue, focusing on protecting national interests and securing the country’s economic resources. The ministry cautioned against giving credence to unverified reports circulating in media or on social platforms.
In addition, National Defense Ministry spokesman Rear Adm. Zeki Aktürk highlighted the importance of humanitarian aid and reconstruction in Gaza. He criticized Israel’s expansion of settlements in the West Bank, stating that such actions undermine peace and stability and violate United Nations Security Council resolutions. Aktürk urged all parties to adopt constructive dialogue, act responsibly, and remain committed to a two-state solution.
Türkiye’s statements reflect a proactive approach to regional security, emphasizing oversight, strategic clarity, and support for international humanitarian efforts amid complex geopolitical dynamics.
