Trump urges congress to cut nearly $5 billion in foreign aid

U.S. President Donald Trump has formally asked Congress to approve cuts totaling $4.9 billion in foreign aid, the White House announced on Friday. The move raises the likelihood of a government shutdown at the end of September if lawmakers fail to reach a compromise.

According to the White House budget office, the reductions would affect programs within the State Department, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and other international assistance initiatives.

The proposal comes as budget negotiations intensify in Washington. Democrats have warned that any attempt to retract funds already approved by Congress would undermine negotiations and significantly increase the risk of a shutdown after September 30.

Trump, who has long criticized U.S. foreign aid spending, argues that taxpayer money should be prioritized for domestic needs. However, his plan is expected to face strong opposition from Democrats and some Republicans who view foreign assistance as a strategic tool of U.S. diplomacy and security.
