Trump urges Australia to grant asylum to Iranian Women’s soccer team
U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Australia to provide asylum to members of Iran’s national women’s soccer team, warning that sending them back could pose serious dangers to their lives.
The team recently competed in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup held in Australia but was eliminated after a 2-0 loss to the Philippines. Concerns arose following reports that the players faced criticism in Iran for standing silently during their national anthem before their first match against South Korea.
Trump described Australia’s plan to repatriate the athletes as “a terrible humanitarian mistake” and stated that the United States is willing to accept the team if Australia does not. International players’ union FIFPRO also highlighted the potential risks to the team’s safety.
This call comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, adding urgency to international attention on the welfare of Iranian athletes abroad.
