Trump offers to mediate Nile water dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has proposed to intervene as a mediator in the long-running dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia over the use of Nile River waters. The issue has remained a major source of tension in northeastern Africa for more than a decade.
In a message addressed to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Trump stated his willingness to relaunch U.S. mediation efforts in order to reach a lasting and balanced solution regarding the sharing of Nile waters. The proposal was made public through his official communication channels.
The dispute centers on Ethiopia’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), a massive hydroelectric project built on the Blue Nile. Ethiopian authorities consider the dam essential for national development and energy production, while Egypt fears it could significantly reduce water flows to downstream countries, threatening agriculture and water security.
Previous rounds of negotiations involving regional and international actors have failed to produce a comprehensive agreement. Egypt has repeatedly called for binding guarantees on the operation of the dam, whereas Ethiopia maintains that the project respects its sovereign right to develop its resources.
Trump’s offer comes amid renewed diplomatic activity in the region and reflects Washington’s interest in stabilizing relations between two key African partners. Whether this initiative will lead to concrete progress remains uncertain, as both Cairo and Addis Ababa continue to defend their strategic interests.
