International Bar Association conference opens in Marrakech to discuss labor law and diversity
The annual conference of the International Bar Association (IBA), which unites over 80,000 lawyers from leading law firms worldwide, commenced in Marrakech under the theme "Labor Law and Diversity." This significant event is organized by the IBA's Committee on Labor Law and Industrial Relations, alongside the Committee on Diversity and Equality, with the support of the Ministry of Justice.
This international gathering aims to address the most pressing legal and practical issues that lawyers and businesses face in light of digital transformations and their implications for labor law. Key topics on the agenda include privacy and cybersecurity in the context of artificial intelligence, as well as emerging trends in labor law globally and in North Africa.
During the opening remarks, Minister of Justice Abdellatif Ouahbi emphasized the crucial role of lawyers in safeguarding fundamental rights and democracy. He noted that this conference provides an excellent platform to discuss the latest legal developments and best practices that accompany advancements in the digital realm.
To navigate these changes, Ouahbi highlighted Morocco's ongoing efforts to implement judicial reforms aimed at modernization and development. He indicated that legislative texts concerning several significant areas, including the Penal Code and Family Code, are currently under review.
Morocco is committed to ensuring that its judicial reforms serve as a vector for societal development, adapting its legislation to align with international developments and digital transformations, he stated.
Similarly, Hicham Sabiry, Secretary of State for Economic Inclusion, Small Enterprise, Employment, and Skills, underscored the Kingdom's dedication to protecting employers' rights in line with major shifts in the global labor market and the emergence of new professions.
To maintain balance in the labor market while enhancing social protection for all workers, a comprehensive and bold revision of the labor code is essential. This adaptation aims to embrace changes while preserving existing achievements, Sabiry remarked.
He further noted that Morocco is actively aligning its legislation with international conventions and agreements, emphasizing that the labor market reforms are being coordinated closely with the International Labour Organization (ILO).
The IBA's annual conference, which continues until Friday, will explore various themes, including adapting to digital transformation in employment, regulatory frameworks for remote work, the protection of digital labor rights, the legal implications of international labor mobility, and cross-border employment regulations.
