Before memes became ubiquitous on social media feeds, their roots extend back to World War II Britain. In 1939, the Ministry of Information released the "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster to bolster morale in the face of wartime anxiety. Fast forward to the 21st century, an original copy resurfaced, sparking a trend of ironic and comedic interpretations.

The term "meme," as coined by Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book "The Selfish Gene," is derived from the Greek word "mimema," signifying something imitated. Dawkins conceptualized memes as units of culture spread through imitation, akin to how genes convey biological information.

In today's online culture, memes have become humorous images or videos remixed to convey social commentary. Utilizing pithy text overlaid on familiar templates, memes encapsulate shared experiences and offer observations on society. Their visual nature grants them universal appeal across languages.

John Smith, a meme culture expert, notes that memes serve as a quick and effective means of communication, essentially becoming the 'lingua franca' of the digital age.

Smith further elaborates that meme creation tools have democratized participation in internet culture. Often perceived as trivial, memes function as cultural time capsules, preserving snapshots of societal attitudes.

Gen Z, in particular, not only employs memes for humor but also as a form of activism. Their proficiency in internet culture empowers them to articulate opinions on social issues through satirical memes.

"Gen Z has transformed memes into a dynamic platform for expressing their viewpoints, whether critiquing social norms or advocating for change," observes Jane Doe, a professor of digital media.

At their core, memes reveal that laughter and commentary can intertwine. While memes may seem frivolous, they enable genuine social expression. Serving as carriers of cultural information, memes are poised to become the artifacts that future generations examine to comprehend the internet's role in shaping society.
