Thailand ruling party takes early lead in tight three-way election race
Thailand’s ruling Bhumjaithai Party emerged as the early frontrunner in Sunday’s general election, according to preliminary results, although no single political force is expected to secure an outright majority in the deeply divided contest.
Partial counts released by the Election Commission showed Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s party leading the race, followed by the reform-oriented People’s Party and the opposition Pheu Thai Party. With only a portion of polling stations reporting, analysts cautioned that coalition negotiations are likely to shape the next government.
The snap election was called in December amid heightened tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border, a move widely seen as an attempt by the conservative leadership to capitalize on rising nationalist sentiment. Voter turnout appeared robust across Bangkok and other urban centers as polling stations closed in the late afternoon.
Despite leading most opinion surveys ahead of the vote, the People’s Party faces structural hurdles that could limit its path to power. Its predecessor won the previous election but was unable to form a government due to resistance from conservative institutions, underscoring Thailand’s long-running political deadlock.
Voters were also asked to weigh in on whether the country should begin drafting a new constitution to replace the current charter adopted in 2017. Early results indicated strong public support for constitutional reform, a key demand of reformist movements seeking to curb the influence of unelected bodies.
With no clear majority in sight, Thailand now faces another period of uncertainty as parties maneuver to form alliances, while the outcome of the constitutional process could play a decisive role in shaping the country’s political future.
