Sudanese army breaks siege of dilling in Kordofan
The Sudanese army announced on Monday that it had broken the siege of the city of Dilling in South Kordofan, which had been imposed for over a year and a half by paramilitary forces. According to the army, the operation successfully opened access to the city and inflicted significant losses on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In a statement, the military said its advance secured the northern and southern approaches to Dilling. The RSF has not yet commented on the announcement, and independent verification of the claims was not immediately possible.
The conflict in Kordofan is part of a wider crisis following the fall of El-Fasher in neighboring Darfur, with paramilitary forces concentrating their operations in the region. Kordofan is strategically important, connecting army-held areas in the north, east, and center of Sudan, and containing valuable resources such as oil and gold.
The UN reported severe humanitarian consequences in the region, including famine in Kadougli last year. Since the outbreak of the conflict in April 2023 between the army and RSF, tens of thousands have been killed and around 11 million displaced. The UN has warned that atrocities, including massacres, sexual violence, abductions, and widespread looting, may extend further in Kordofan.
