Spanish PM Denounces "Double Standards" on Gaza Conflict at NATO Summit
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez delivered a powerful message at the NATO summit, urging the West to reject "double standards" in addressing the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Sanchez joined NATO leaders in their support for Ukraine, but he also emphasized the need for a consistent and principled approach when it comes to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
During the 75th anniversary summit in Washington, Sanchez made it clear that the world's response to the crisis in Ukraine should be mirrored in its handling of the situation in Gaza. "If we are telling our people that we are supporting Ukraine because we are defending the international law, this is the same to what we have to do towards Gaza," he stated firmly.
Sanchez criticized the perceived discrepancy in the international community's approach, calling for a "consistent political position" that does not apply "double standards." He argued that the humanitarian crisis affecting the Palestinian people deserves the same level of urgency and attention as the conflict in Ukraine.
Furthermore, the Spanish leader urged the international community to take concrete steps to address the Gaza crisis, including pushing for an "immediate and urgent ceasefire" to prevent a potential escalation that could spill over into neighboring Lebanon. Sanchez emphasized the importance of creating the conditions for a peaceful solution, advocating for an international peace conference to advance the goal of a Palestinian state.
Notably, Spain under Sanchez's leadership has taken a more critical stance towards Israel's policies, recognizing the Palestinian state and condemning Israel's conduct during the recent hostilities with Hamas. This stance has put the Spanish government at odds with the right-wing government in Israel.
Sanchez's remarks at the NATO summit underscored the need for a balanced and principled approach to global conflicts, one that does not favor certain parties over others based on geopolitical considerations. As the world grapples with multiple crises, the Spanish leader's call for consistency and fairness in addressing the Gaza conflict serves as a reminder that the principles of international law and human rights must be upheld without double standards.
