Spain records new rail accident as train hits crane near Cartagena
A commuter train collided with a crane on Thursday around midday near the city of Cartagena, in southeastern Spain, leaving several people with minor injuries, according to the national rail operator Renfe.
The incident occurred in the area of Alumbres and involved a narrow-gauge suburban train operating on the Feve network. Renfe confirmed that the train did not derail and that the crane involved was external equipment, not owned by the railway company.
Emergency services were alerted shortly after noon and provided assistance to passengers with light injuries, although no exact number was immediately confirmed. Rail traffic between Cartagena and Los Nietos was temporarily suspended before resuming roughly an hour and a half later, following authorization from infrastructure manager Adif.
The accident comes amid heightened scrutiny of Spain’s railway safety, following two serious rail incidents earlier this week. One deadly collision in Andalusia resulted in dozens of fatalities, while another accident in Catalonia caused one death and multiple severe injuries.
Images shared on social media showed the single-carriage train stopped on open tracks, surrounded by firefighters and police in a rural area. The latest incident has further fueled concerns among railway workers, with unions calling for urgent safety measures and announcing a planned strike in early February.
