Samsung SDI signs first EV battery supply deal with Mercedes-Benz
South Korea’s Samsung SDI has reached a significant milestone by signing its first electric vehicle (EV) battery supply agreement with German automaker Mercedes-Benz. The multi-year deal marks a new phase of collaboration between the two companies as the global automotive industry accelerates its transition toward electrification.
Under the agreement, Samsung SDI will provide advanced batteries featuring high-nickel NCM (nickel, cobalt, and manganese) chemistry. This type of battery is known for its high energy density, which can improve vehicle range and overall performance—key factors in the growing EV market.
The batteries are expected to power the next generation of Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles, particularly compact and mid-size SUVs as well as coupe models. These segments are seen as crucial for expanding EV adoption among a wider customer base.
While financial details of the contract were not disclosed, the partnership highlights increasing cooperation between battery manufacturers and automakers striving to meet stricter environmental standards and rising consumer demand for cleaner mobility solutions.
This agreement also reflects the intensifying competition in the EV battery sector, where companies are racing to secure long-term supply deals with major automotive brands. For Samsung SDI, the deal strengthens its position as a key player in the global battery supply chain.
