Russia pledges continued oil supplies to Cuba amid deepening energy crisis
Russia has pledged to continue supplying oil to Cuba as the island faces a severe energy crisis driven by supply disruptions and geopolitical tensions.
The announcement was made by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who confirmed that Moscow intends to maintain its support following the recent delivery of a tanker carrying approximately 700,000 barrels of crude oil.
The shipment provided temporary relief to Cuba, where fuel shortages have led to widespread power outages, transportation disruptions, and strict rationing measures. The country relies heavily on imported energy, making it particularly vulnerable to supply interruptions.
The crisis intensified after oil shipments from Venezuela were halted earlier this year, leaving Cuba scrambling to secure alternative sources. Additional pressure came as other suppliers, including Mexico, also suspended deliveries, further tightening the island’s energy supply.
Despite broader sanctions, the United States allowed the recent Russian delivery on humanitarian grounds, while indicating that future shipments would be assessed individually. At the same time, Washington has warned of potential economic consequences for countries continuing to export oil to Cuba.
Moscow has described its assistance as humanitarian and emphasized its long-standing relationship with Havana. Analysts say the move reflects both strategic ties and geopolitical positioning, as Russia seeks to support an ally under economic pressure.
However, experts caution that a single shipment offers only short-term relief. Cuba’s structural energy challenges remain unresolved, and sustained external support will be necessary to stabilize the country’s power supply and economy.
