Poland signs €44 billion agreement with Brussels to modernize its military

Poland has become the first member state of the European Union to sign a major loan agreement with Brussels under the Security Action For Europe (SAFE) program, securing nearly €44 billion to strengthen its military capabilities and defense industry.

The agreement marks one of the largest defense financing initiatives launched by the European Union in recent years. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the deal as a historic turning point for both Poland and Europe during the official signing ceremony held in Warsaw.

Under the SAFE program, created in 2025, the European Union has made €150 billion available through preferential loans aimed at reinforcing European defense systems. The initiative supports joint military projects, weapons procurement, ammunition production, and the protection of critical infrastructure across member states.

With €43.7 billion allocated to Poland, the country becomes the largest beneficiary of the program. The funding is expected to accelerate the modernization of the Polish armed forces while strengthening domestic defense manufacturing capacities.

As the most populous country on NATO’s eastern flank, Poland has significantly increased military spending in recent years due to growing regional security concerns. The country currently allocates nearly 4.8% of its gross domestic product to defense, making it one of the alliance’s highest defense spenders relative to economic size.

European leaders have increasingly emphasized the need for stronger strategic autonomy and enhanced defense cooperation following geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe and uncertainty surrounding future American military engagement in the region.

Polish officials stated that the agreement would improve national security while contributing to broader European stability. European authorities also presented the initiative as a demonstration of the EU’s determination to assume greater responsibility for collective security and defense preparedness.

The agreement was signed by Polish finance and defense officials alongside European Commissioner for Budget Piotr Serafin and European Commissioner for Defence Andrius Kubilius.
