Plane with 11 people on board reported missing in eastern Indonesia
Authorities in Indonesia launched an extensive search operation on Saturday after losing contact with a small aircraft carrying 11 people while flying over the eastern part of the country. The plane, operated by a local air transport company, was en route to Makassar in South Sulawesi when communication was suddenly cut.
According to rescue officials, the aircraft had departed from the island of Java and was last detected shortly after midday local time. Ground and air rescue teams were quickly mobilized in a mountainous area near the city of Makassar, close to the plane’s last known position. The operation involves the air force, police units, volunteers, as well as helicopters and drones.
Search and rescue authorities said the terrain and weather conditions could complicate efforts, but stressed that all available resources have been deployed to locate the aircraft and its occupants. No emergency signal has been confirmed so far.
Indonesia, a vast archipelago made up of thousands of islands, relies heavily on air transport to connect remote regions. However, aviation safety remains a challenge, with several serious accidents recorded in recent years. The disappearance of this aircraft once again highlights the risks associated with air travel in difficult geographic conditions.
