Pelosi accuses Trump of pursuing Greenland to aid Putin
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has sharply criticized President Donald Trump, claiming his push to acquire Greenland undermines NATO and ultimately benefits Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a recent interview on MSNBC's "The Briefing," she pointedly remarked that Trump's interest in the territory and his disruptions to the alliance appear designed to favor his "friend" Putin. Pelosi recounted confronting Trump directly, telling him she had reached her limit because "all roads lead to Putin" under his leadership.
The White House confirmed Trump's consideration of various options to secure Greenland, including potential military action. Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated that deploying U.S. forces remains available to the commander-in-chief. Trump himself defended the move, arguing that Greenland hosts Russian and Chinese vessels and is vital for national security. Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed lawmakers that the administration seeks to purchase the territory from Denmark, according to reports.
NATO allies rallied behind Denmark amid rising tensions. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that any U.S. military action against Greenland would dismantle the alliance, ending the security framework established since World War II. Six major European nations France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement affirming that Greenland belongs to its people and that decisions rest solely with Denmark and Greenland.
Russia is closely monitoring developments. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov described the Arctic as a zone of vital national and strategic interests, noting the dramatic shifts. Norwegian analyst Arild Landri told public broadcaster NRK that Trump's approach sows discord within NATO, playing into Russia's hands. A Center for Strategic and International Studies report warned that such rhetoric could legitimize challenges to sovereign borders under the guise of national security, emboldening Russian military assertions elsewhere in the European Arctic.
Pelosi's allegations lack concrete evidence of direct coordination between Trump and Putin on Greenland policy.
