North Korea: Kim Jong-un’s daughter makes first appearance at leaders’ mausoleum
Kim Ju Ae, the daughter of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, has made her first public visit to the mausoleum where the country’s former leaders are buried, according to images released by state media on Friday. The appearance is seen as further strengthening her status as a potential successor.
The visit took place at the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun in Pyongyang, where Kim Il-sung, the founder of North Korea, and his son Kim Jong-il are entombed. Both men are referred to as “eternal leaders” in official propaganda.
Kim Ju Ae accompanied her father alongside senior officials during the ceremony, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported. She represents the fourth generation of the Kim dynasty, which has ruled the country since 1948 and is known as the “Paektu bloodline,” named after a sacred mountain in Korean mythology.
The young girl, whose exact age has not been officially disclosed, has appeared several times in public with Kim Jong-un since her first appearance in 2022. South Korean intelligence agencies believe these appearances may indicate that she is being prepared for a future leadership role.
In 2024, North Korean state media referred to Kim Ju Ae using the highly honorific title “hyangdo,” a term traditionally reserved for the leader or their designated successor.
