Nigeria tightens broadcast rules ahead of 2027 elections
Nigeria has introduced stricter regulations for radio and television broadcasters ahead of the 2027 general elections, aiming to reduce divisive content and limit misinformation during the campaign period.
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) announced that presenters will no longer be allowed to express personal political opinions on air, intimidate guests, or broadcast content considered inflammatory or capable of inciting social unrest. The regulator warned that violations of the broadcasting code would result in sanctions.
The upcoming elections are scheduled for early 2027, and authorities are seeking to prevent a repeat of past electoral cycles marked by misinformation, heightened political tensions, and sporadic violence. Officials argue that stronger media oversight is necessary to protect national stability and ensure fair electoral communication.
The NBC stated that broadcasters must ensure balanced coverage, respect opposing viewpoints, and avoid presenting personal views as factual information. It also emphasized that media outlets play a critical role in maintaining unity in a politically diverse society.
However, the decision has sparked criticism from opposition figures and civil society groups, who argue that the new rules could restrict freedom of expression. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar said the measures risk limiting democratic debate and reducing space for independent journalism.
While similar regulations exist in other democracies during election periods, analysts note that enforcement in Nigeria has often been inconsistent. The debate highlights ongoing tensions between media regulation and press freedom in the country’s evolving democratic system.
Authorities insist the measures are intended to promote responsible journalism and reduce risks of political instability as the country prepares for one of its most closely watched elections.
