New Zealand temporarily closes embassy in Iran amid rising violence
New Zealand has temporarily closed its embassy in Tehran and relocated its consular operations to Ankara, Turkey, citing growing security concerns linked to escalating unrest in Iran, officials in Wellington announced on Friday.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, all New Zealand diplomatic personnel departed Iran over the past 24 hours using commercial flights. The decision follows strong remarks by Foreign Minister Winston Peters, who expressed deep concern over what he described as an intensifying campaign of violence and repression.
In a post on social media, Peters condemned the actions of Iranian security forces, including the reported killing of protesters, calling the situation unacceptable. He emphasized that the safety of diplomatic staff and New Zealand citizens remained a top priority.
The ministry reiterated its travel advisory urging New Zealanders to avoid travel to Iran and advised those currently in the country to leave as soon as possible. Officials also warned that New Zealand’s capacity to provide consular assistance within Iran has become extremely limited under current conditions.
