New US consul general Michael Lally begins his mission in Istanbul

Michael Lally, a seasoned diplomat with decades of experience in international trade, has officially taken up his post as the new US Consul General in Istanbul. In a message shared on Friday, Lally highlighted his long-standing personal connection to Türkiye and his commitment to strengthening economic and cultural ties between the two nations.

“I am honored to serve as the US Consul General in Istanbul,” Lally said, noting that much of his career has focused on expanding trade partnerships between the US and global markets. “Türkiye holds a special place in my heart.”

He recalled his first trip to the country in 1997 with his then-fiancé, describing travels across Türkiye, stays in youth hostels, rides on dolmuş minibuses, and his early attempts at learning Turkish. Next month, he and his wife Lilia will mark the 30th anniversary of their first meeting—also in Istanbul.

Lally previously served as Minister-Counselor for Commercial Affairs in Ankara, where he worked closely on bilateral trade issues. “Turks and Americans are natural business partners,” he said, pointing to trade volume surpassing $40 billion and expressing confidence that the potential for growth remains significant.

Praising the warmth and hospitality of the Turkish people, Lally said he has often felt the “true heart of Türkiye,” both as a diplomat and as a visitor.

Quoting US Ambassador Tom Barrack, he emphasized the longstanding partnership between the two countries: “The US and Türkiye have been friends, partners, and allies for decades,” adding that his priority is to deepen cooperation and strengthen people-to-people connections.

Lally concluded by expressing enthusiasm for returning to Istanbul: “This city’s history, culture, and energy have always inspired me. I look forward to traveling across Istanbul and the Marmara region, meeting partners, and creating new opportunities together.”
