New earthquakes shake northern Peru after dozens injured

Two additional earthquakes were recorded off the northern coast of Peru on Sunday, further affecting the area recently hit by a strong tremor that left at least 25 people injured, according to official sources.

The strongest of the two new seismic events reached a magnitude of 5.1 and was detected in the early evening. Its epicenter was located offshore, west of the city of Chimbote, and it was felt moderately in the surrounding area. A second, weaker earthquake measuring 3.8 occurred later the same day in the same zone.

These tremors followed a powerful magnitude 6 earthquake that struck the region late Saturday night. The main quake was felt across several northern cities and as far as the capital, Lima. Authorities reported that 12 of the injured remain hospitalized in the regions of Áncash and La Libertad.

In addition to human injuries, the earlier earthquake caused damage to homes, roads, health centers, commercial areas, and electricity networks. Several aftershocks were also recorded hours after the main event, increasing concern among residents.

Peru lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the most seismically active zones in the world, where the Nazca tectonic plate collides with the Pacific Plate. This geographic reality makes earthquakes a frequent and ongoing risk across the country.
