Czech Republic: To Acquire Four More Israeli Spyder Air Defense Systems
The Czech Republic is preparing to expand its air defense capabilities through the acquisition of four additional Spyder systems developed by Israeli defense manufacturer Rafael. The planned purchase reflects Prague’s continued efforts to strengthen its ability to respond to evolving aerial threats and reinforce the protection of strategic sites and military units.
Czech Defense Minister Jaromír Zůna confirmed the preparations during a meeting of the parliamentary defense committee, according to information reported by the Czech news agency ČTK.
New Acquisition to Expand Existing Defense Capabilities
The four additional systems will complement an earlier procurement agreement signed in 2021, under which the Czech Republic ordered four Spyder air defense batteries as part of an intergovernmental deal valued at approximately $620 million.
That initial contract also included radar equipment manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). All four batteries have since been produced, with two already delivered to the Czech Republic.
The latest acquisition would further expand the country's access to an integrated air defense network, building on the capabilities established through the original agreement.
Spyder All-in-One: A Mobile Solution Against Aerial Threats
The newly planned systems will feature Rafael's Spyder All-in-One configuration, which integrates several essential defense components into a single vehicle.
The platform combines radar technology, electro-optical sensors, a command-and-control system and interceptor missiles, including the Python and Derby families.
Designed to provide protection for both fixed installations and mobile military units, the system can engage a range of airborne targets, including unmanned aerial vehicles, aircraft and helicopters.
Its integrated architecture is intended to facilitate deployment and improve operational coordination by bringing detection, tracking and interception capabilities together on one mobile platform.
Prague Continues to Invest in Air Defense Modernization
The additional procurement highlights the Czech Republic's continued commitment to modernizing its military infrastructure and improving its response to increasingly complex aerial security challenges.
The country's initial decision to acquire the Israeli system in 2021 also marked a significant development in NATO's defense procurement landscape, making the Czech Republic the alliance's first member to purchase a complete Israeli air defense system.
The planned expansion could further consolidate this partnership while increasing the country's capacity to protect its airspace and critical military infrastructure.
