NASA seeks four volunteers for year-long Mars mission simulation
NASA is recruiting four volunteers to participate in a year-long isolation study designed to simulate the conditions astronauts could experience during future missions to Mars and the Moon.
The participants will live and work in a controlled environment at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, where they will complete scientific tasks and mission activities that replicate the challenges of long-duration space travel. The project aims to better understand the physical, psychological, and operational demands of deep-space exploration without leaving Earth.
The mission is expected to begin before August 2027 and will last approximately 14 months, including training, the isolation phase, and post-mission evaluations. During the simulated mission, participants will perform activities such as habitat maintenance, scientific research, equipment testing, and simulated planetary surface operations.
NASA plans to use the data collected to improve astronaut health and performance during extended missions. The findings will also support preparations for future lunar operations under the agency's long-term exploration strategy and contribute to the development of technologies and procedures needed for eventual human missions to Mars.
Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements, including age, physical fitness, technical skills, and educational or professional experience relevant to space operations. Candidates must also successfully complete comprehensive medical and psychological evaluations to ensure they can cope with prolonged isolation and confined living conditions.
Researchers have long recognized that extended isolation presents significant challenges. Long periods in confined environments can affect sleep patterns, mental health, stress levels, and team dynamics. Understanding these effects is considered essential as space agencies prepare for missions that may keep astronauts away from Earth for months or even years.
While the selected participants will receive financial compensation, NASA has not publicly disclosed the payment for this mission. Previous human exploration simulations have compensated volunteers based on the duration of their participation.
The initiative forms part of NASA's broader efforts to advance human space exploration by testing both technology and human resilience before launching future crewed missions beyond low Earth orbit.
