Myanmar releases more than 4,300 prisoners after death sentences are commuted
The military authorities in Myanmar have announced a large-scale prisoner release following a decision to commute all death sentences to life imprisonment, in a move tied to the country’s traditional New Year celebrations.
According to official statements, more than 4,300 prisoners are expected to be freed, including around 180 foreign nationals. The measure also includes sentence reductions, with many prison terms under 40 years being shortened by one-sixth.
The decision was ordered by Myanmar’s leader, Min Aung Hlaing, who said the policy is part of a broader effort aimed at “national reconciliation” and social stability. The announcement came shortly after he assumed the role of president in a controversial political transition.
Human rights groups have long criticized the justice system in Myanmar, especially since the 2021 military takeover. Reports from the United Nations suggest that more than 130 people were sentenced to death in the following year, although exact figures remain difficult to verify due to limited transparency.
Since the coup, political repression has intensified, with tens of thousands of people reportedly detained for political reasons, according to advocacy organizations. Many detainees are linked to protests or opposition activities against military rule.
Among those still imprisoned is former civilian leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, who is serving a long sentence in detention under undisclosed conditions.
The government stated that the prisoner release is part of traditional New Year amnesty practices, but observers note that concerns remain about the political situation and ongoing conflict in the country.
The United Nations has repeatedly called for greater transparency and respect for human rights, urging Myanmar’s authorities to end arbitrary detention and restore judicial independence.
