Musk backs orbital data centers as AI energy warnings grow

Elon Musk has renewed support for space-based computing infrastructure after Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang warned that artificial intelligence could soon overwhelm global power systems. Musk posted that space represents the only viable path forward, reinforcing his long-standing view that orbital data centers could solve rising energy constraints tied to AI expansion.

Huang has repeatedly warned that the rapid evolution of AI systems is driving exponential increases in computational demand. He has described a shift from generative AI to reasoning systems that require significantly more processing power, followed by agent-based models that multiply those requirements further. He has suggested that combined industry adoption could push global computing demand to levels far beyond current infrastructure capacity, with US data centers already approaching grid limits and projected to exceed 150 gigawatts of consumption by 2028 under industry forecasts he cited.

Musk’s proposal focuses on relocating data infrastructure into orbit, where continuous solar exposure and natural cooling conditions could reduce energy constraints. The concept also seeks to bypass terrestrial limitations such as land use conflicts and power grid bottlenecks. The idea remains theoretical at scale, but it has gained attention as AI workloads continue to expand faster than energy infrastructure development in major economies.

Interest in orbital computing has extended beyond individual executives. Alphabet has reportedly explored early-stage collaboration with SpaceX on experimental satellite systems for space-based data processing under an internal initiative. The project aims to test prototypes in orbit within the next few years as part of broader research into off-planet computing architectures, reflecting growing industry interest in alternative infrastructure models.

SpaceX has also positioned orbital data centers as a long-term strategic goal, linking aspects of its corporate incentives to future computing capacity targets in space. The company has acknowledged significant technical and financial risks, including questions over commercial viability and the cost of deploying large-scale hardware in orbit. Critics note that terrestrial data centers remain far more cost efficient and that required space-based solar and computing systems are not yet available at industrial scale.
