Morocco's Northern Coast: Immigration Crackdown Leads to Mass Arrests

Moroccan authorities have launched a significant operation against illegal immigration networks in the northern cities of Tangier and Tetouan, resulting in the arrest of 60 individuals. This crackdown, which took place on September 12, 2024, is part of the country's ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking and irregular migration. 

The arrests were made following a series of coordinated raids by the National Brigade of the Judicial Police (BNPJ) in various neighborhoods of the two cities. The operation aimed to dismantle criminal networks involved in organizing and facilitating clandestine migration to Europe, primarily through the dangerous sea route across the Strait of Gibraltar.

According to a statement by the BNPJ, the suspects are accused of forming a criminal network that specializes in organizing illegal migration operations, including the provision of boats and transportation to potential migrants. The authorities also seized several boats, engines, and navigation equipment during the raids, indicating the scale of the illegal operations.
